Before you start

Date of first registration and weight of your vehicle

Your vehicle registration certificate (V5C) will tell you the date of first registration and weight of your vehicle.

If you do not have your V5C, the date of first registration and vehicle weight can be found via Gov.uk's vehicle enquiry service. If your vehicle is registered outside of the United Kingdom, you will need to refer to your vehicle registration certificate or your Vehicle Licensing Authority to find your vehicle's date of first registration, weight and Euro emission standard.

Euro emission standards

For newer vehicles, the Euro emission standard may be listed on the V5C in section D.2. If your vehicle meets the required Euro emission standard, it will also meet the required T-Charge standard.

The T-Charge standard is:

  • Euro 3 for quadricycles or motorised tricycles (motorcycles are not subject to the T-Charge)
  • Euro 4 for cars, vans and minibuses
  • Euro IV for HGVs, buses and coaches

A small number of vehicles manufactured before the Euro 4/Euro IV standard became mandatory will have NOx and PM emissions that meet Euro 4/Euro IV or better. These vehicles are referred to as early adopters and will not be subject to the T-Charge. This tool will help you understand if your vehicle is an early adopter and what action you should take.

Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) compliance

If you drive a lorry, bus, coach, minibus or larger van, check if your vehicle is affected with the LEZ vehicle checker. If your vehicle meets the LEZ standards, it may not meet the tighter emissions standards for the T-Charge.

The T-Charge is different from the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scheme. If you meet the T-Charge standards you may not meet the tighter emission standards for the upcoming ULEZ. To see if your vehicle is affected, visit the ULEZ vehicle checker.
