You can pay the ULEZ daily charge from 8 April 2019. It will be:

  • £12.50 for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes)
  • £100 for heavier vehicles, including lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) and buses/coaches (over 5 tonnes)

This will be in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge and the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charge and will replace the T-Charge.

From 25 October 2021 the area will expand to the inner London area bounded by the North and South Circular roads.

When ULEZ operates

A daily charge runs from midnight to midnight. If you drive within the ULEZ area across two days, for example before midnight and after midnight, you will be liable to pay two daily charges if your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ standards.

Which vehicles are affected

See the emissions standards, daily charges and penalties for these four vehicle groups:

If your vehicle is affected there are ways to avoid the charge and/or meet the standards.

A change from LEZ standards

If you drive a lorry, van, bus, minibus or other specialist vehicle and it currently meets the Low Emission Zone emissions standards, it may not meet the new ULEZ standards. Check if your vehicle meets the ULEZ standards using our ULEZ vehicle checker.

From 26 October 2020 the emission standards for the LEZ will change.

Non-UK registered vehicles

Owners of non-UK registered vehicles will need to pay the ULEZ charge to drive in the zone if they do not meet the emissions standards.

You can check the table of emissions requirements and charges for ULEZ and LEZ on the Changes to the LEZ page.

Our ULEZ checker will hold information on many vehicles registered outside the UK. If we don't hold your vehicle's details you will get the option to submit a copy of your vehicle's registration document showing the Euro standard it was manufactured to.

Postcode checker

Check which locations fall within the charging zone using our postcode checker. The red area on this interactive map shows the Congestion Charging Zone - the ULEZ will cover the same area until it expands in 2021.

ULEZ expansion - October 2021

From 25 October 2021 the ULEZ boundary will be extended to create a larger zone bounded by the North and South Circular Roads. If you are driving any petrol or diesel vehicle within this enlarged area you will also need to meet new tighter emissions standards or pay a daily charge.

This daily charge is in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge if you drive in central London as well.

Vehicles using the North and South Circular Roads and not going into the ULEZ will not be charged.

Driving into the ULEZ

The area covered by the ULEZ will be clearly signposted with road signs showing where it applies. There will be no barriers or toll booths. Cameras will read vehicle number plates as they are driven within the zone to check against our database to see if they meet the ULEZ emission standards.

Road signs will be in place before the ULEZ starts at every entry point along the boundary and along key arterial approaches. They will sit alongside or below existing Congestion Charge signs.

The ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year including weekends and public holidays. It will cover the same area as the Congestion Charging Zone until 2021.
