Buses operated under contract to TfL are not exempt from the ULEZ. Find out what we're doing to reduce emissions from buses.

Minimum emission standards

All vehicles in this category will need to meet Euro VI standards.

The ULEZ will be enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age - but Euro VI engines are generally those registered with the DVLA after 2014. You can check your vehicle.

Charges (if ULEZ standards not met)

We would prefer vehicle owners to use vehicles that meet the new emissions standards rather than pay a daily charge.

  • Daily charge: £100
  • Penalty charge: £1,000 (reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days)

The daily charge will run from midnight to midnight, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

These are in addition to any Congestion Charge or Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charges that apply.

How to pay

  • Register for Auto Pay (£10 admin charge per vehicle) - this will be expanded to include ULEZ payments. Already have Auto Pay? Then you don't need to do anything
  • Pay online on this website from 8 April 2019
  • Download the free official TfL app and pay from 8 April 2019
  • Pay by phone
    UK: 0343 222 2222 (TfL call charges)
    International:+44 20 7649 9122
Textphone: 020 7649 9123 (if you have impaired hearing)

Your options

If your vehicle does not meet the required ULEZ standards you can:

Pay the daily charge

  • You'll be able to pay any ULEZ, LEZ and/or Congestion Charges that apply online, all at the same time

Fit emissions reduction technology

The ULEZ scheme allows for some vehicles to retrofit emissions reduction technology to meet the ULEZ standards.

Retrofit technologies will need to be certified by the government's Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS). The CVRAS currently only has emissions reduction technologies certified for buses. We expect retrofit technologies to be developed for coaches and other specialist heavy vehicles where replacing the vehicle would be very expensive.

Any HGV or coach with emissions reduction technology fitted must have this certified by the CVRAS. Once certified, we will be notified directly.

More details on the retrofit accreditation process and suppliers are available on the Energy Savings Trust website.

Future changes

From October 2020 the LEZ standards for buses, coaches, lorries and larger vehicles will be strengthened to match the ULEZ Euro VI standard.

All vehicles will need to meet Euro VI emissions standards within the LEZ boundary or pay a daily charge.
