Travel mentoring

What our travel mentors offer

We can:

  • Give advice by telephone and email to help plan an accessible route
  • Provide a mentor to accompany you on your first few practice journeys to help you learn how to travel the network independently
  • Assist you virtually, using apps available on most smartphones

Our travel mentors can help anyone who lives or travels in London. We cover all types of journey on TfL transport including bus, Tube, Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground, tram, Thames Clipper river boats and the IFS Cloud Cable Car.

Get in touch

Email travelmentor@tfl.gov.uk or call 020 3054 4361 (call charges may apply) 09:00-16:00, Monday to Friday to find out more or book an appointment.

If your journey is only on the DLR or only on the Elizabeth line you may prefer to use their Community Ambassadors who offer advice on those specific networks and can accompany you on bespoke journeys.

Mobility aid recognition scheme

If you use a mobility aid on the bus, you can apply for a Mobility Aid Recognition card.

When you apply for a card, we will confirm with you whether your mobility aid meets bus specifications. If it does a travel mentor will visit you and take you out on the network to ensure you are confident to get on and off buses safely. You will then get a card which is recognised on our buses to show that your mobility aid has been approved.

This is a voluntary scheme - you do not have to have a mobility aid recognition card to travel on our buses.

As part of the service, our travel mentor can offer you practice on out of service buses to help enable you to travel with confidence on our network or go on a journey to ensure you travel in the safest way.  The mentor will share useful tips about planning journeys and give you guidance about travelling on our services.

Customers find mobility aid recognition cards useful, as they help bus drivers know your mobility aid is suitable for travel on our buses. Bus drivers must lower the ramp on your request if access is possible.

To join our Mobility Aid Recognition Scheme, or to find out more, email us at travelmentor@tfl.gov.uk or call us on 020 3054 4361 between 09:00 - 16:00 Monday to Friday to book an appointment (network charges may apply).
