West London Orbital

The aim of this work is set out in the Mayor's Transport Strategy.

Proposed scheme

The service would connect the Opportunity Areas of:

  • Great West Corridor
  • Old Oak/Park Royal
  • Wembley
  • Brent Cross/Cricklewood

In the north, it's proposed that the service would run along the Dudding Hill line - this is currently used for freight services only.

The new service aims to:

  • Support the creation of up to 15,800 new homes
  • Reduce journey times for public transport journeys across west and northwest London, and connect people to jobs across the area
  • Alleviate crowding on congested rail and Tube lines
  • Offer much-needed transport alternatives to encourage people to shift to sustainable transport and improve air quality

Progress so far

We are working closely with the West London Alliance, our West London borough partners and Network Rail to develop the case for the scheme, explore the engineering and timetable feasibility, and identify funding opportunities.

Our strategic narrative document provides an overview of what the scheme is, what it aims to achieve and a summary of the benefits of the scheme for west London. All proposals will be subject to future public consultation before any major decisions are made.

If funding can be identified - and we get all approvals needed for the scheme - then services could start in the late 2020s.
