You asked

I am an university student in Hong Kong and conducting a research on bus safety. In this connection, I would like to have the following statistics: - number of travel accidents involving public bus by year in London in the last five years - the related operated bus kilometres With the above figures, I can derive the accident rates and compare them with that of Hong Kong to assess the safety level of Hong Kong. If the statistics are not under the purview of your department, I should be grateful if you can let me have the email address of the responsible department.

TfL Ref: 3946-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 25 March 2020 asking for the number of travel accidents involving public bus by year in London in the last five years, and the related operated bus kilometres.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm we do hold some of the information you require.

Our bus incident statistics are published on our website using the following link here https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-safety-data.

We also publish bus performance data which includes the overall kms operated by buses in London: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/buses-performance-data. We don’t hold incident vehicle and pedestrian movements per km on roads.

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

The Government has announced a series of measures to tackle the Coronavirus. It is essential for London, and in particular for all critical workers, that we continue to provide a safe transport network that enables them to make the journeys they need to.

In current circumstances, we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.

Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
