FOI request detail

ULEZ

Request ID: FOI-0551-2223
Date published: 22 June 2022

You asked

After having talked to someone on the phone from tfl I was told to send an email to this address and with the freedom of information ask if i could know the amount of different vehicles that enter the ULEZ zone everyday and also know how many comply with the ULEZ zone requirements and how many do not comply and have to pay a charge. I would also like to get the numbers on the difference between when the zone was implemented and now to compare the changes it has caused to pollution in london. Finally I would also like to get the difference in numbers of people that ride on public transports before the ULEZ zone was implemented and now that the ULEZ zone has been implemented. I would like to use this information for a project I have regarding the Extended Essay for the International Baccalaureate. I am researching how the ULEZ zone was successful or not in reducing the negative externalities of pollution in London. Many thanks for your kind assistance.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

In respect of your questions about vehicles entering the Ultra Low Emission Zone and those which are compliant and those which have to pay a charge, please note that this information is already published online in our regular ULEZ factsheets, which date back to the beginning of the scheme in April 2019. Those factsheets can be found on our website here:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/ultra-low-emission-zone - scroll down to the “Finance, Operations and Performance” section. As you can see, the factsheets show the following (as well as other data about the scheme):

  • the average daily number of unique vehicles in the zone;
  • the average daily number of charges;
  • the average daily unique compliant vehicles

In regard to the second element of your request on the number of people using public transport in London, this information is already published in our regular Travel in London reports which can be found here:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/travel-in-london-reports

These reports provide a wealth of information and analysis about travel trends in London going back over a decade. Note that changes in travel patterns will be down to a number of different factors.

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
