Scientific evidence - To back ULEZ Other London please

Request ID: FOI-0075-2425
Date published: 02 May 2024

You asked

Morning TFL Could someone kindly provide concrete proof that since ULEZ introduced across London that there has been significant change in air pollution ? • what was air pollution like before Ulez and now after Ulez who is going to release the truth ? • who has scientific evidence ? That warrant the hard ship of people forced to change their cars and being fined £12.50 a day ? • Currently I understand TFL making 1 million a day in ULEZ charges ? Many thanks for courtesy response to come !

We answered

TfL Ref: EIR-0075-2425

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8th April 2024 asking for information about the ULEZ scheme.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Could someone kindly provide concrete proof that since ULEZ introduced across London that there has been significant change in air pollution ?

  • what was air pollution like before Ulez and now after Ulez who is going to release the truth ?
  • who has scientific evidence?”

Please see these previous replies published on the FOI pages of our website which answer your questions, as follows:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-2672-2223 – this response provides the rationale for the expansion of the ULEZ scheme across London;

And;

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-0025-2425 – this recent reply provides links to the data that is used to monitor air quality in London, and explains that the decision to expand ULEZ London-wide has seen a reduction in older, more polluting vehicles seen driving in the zone, as seen in the London-wide ULEZ first month report (see here: https://www.london.gov.uk/programmes-strategies/environment-and-climate-change/environment-and-climate-change-publications/london-wide-ultra-low-emission-zone-first-month-report).  An assessment of measured pollutant concentrations, including roadside NO2, will be included as part of the ULEZ six-month report - which will allow sufficient time for robust monitoring - due to be published later this year.
