FOI request detail

Greenwich Collisions

Request ID: FOI-4496-2324
Date published: 17 April 2024

You asked

- The number of fatalities at bus stops in Greenwich over the past 5 years - The number of accidents at bus stops in Greenwich over the past 5 years - The average number of fatalities and accidents across other London Boroughs over the past five years? I would like a sense of whether Greenwich is safer than other Boroughs, or if we have more work to do. My requests concerns all collisions at bus stops – not just those involving buses.

We answered

Our Ref:         FOI-4496-2324

Thank you for your request received on 20 March 2024 asking for information about collisions in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Each year, more than 4,000 people are killed or seriously injured on London’s streets. Any loss of life or serious injury is a tragedy and by adopting a bold Vision Zero approach, we are putting the elimination of road danger at the heart of what we do. We are taking urgent and continued action in a range of areas by transforming London’s streets, recently introducing new 20mph speed limits across our roads in central London.

You asked for:

•           The number of fatalities at bus stops in Greenwich over the past 5 years
•           The number of accidents at bus stops in Greenwich over the past 5 years
•           The average number of fatalities and accidents across other London Boroughs over the past five years? I would like a sense of whether Greenwich is safer than other Boroughs, or if we have more work to do.

We do not hold the specific information you have requested. Data is collected by the Metropolitan and City of London police using Department for Transport guidance and is generally known as STATS19 data. It is not a requirement for the police to code collisions as at a bus stop.

Collision information is published in the Road Danger Reduction Dashboard on our website, so you can obtain some data on collisions in Greenwich:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/road-safety

Please note, that we cannot identify if a person was injured while waiting for a bus, or if the bus stop was in some way involved in the collision e.g. vehicle loses control and collides with bus stop infrastructure. Again this is not a STATS19 field.

It should be noted that any analysis of the available data should consider the borough size and the number of bus stops located in a borough before any conclusions are drawn. For example, Greenwich has a higher number of bus stops (715) than the London average of 542.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
