Dear TfL, Please tell me how much money you have paid out to people who have been injured inside a moving bus in each of the last five years (1 Jan to 31 Dec inclusive, each year from 2012 onward). Please break that figure down by award and date (eg £x on 21 Jan 2013). I don't need details of the recipients but I would like to know what happened in each accident. Additionally, please tell me how many accidents have been logged in moving buses in the same period in total.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 31 January 2018 asking for information about bus incidents.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

Please tell me how much money you have paid out to people who have been injured inside a moving bus in each of the last five years (1 Jan to 31 Dec inclusive, each year from 2012 onward).

Each bus route is tendered out to private companies who run the services on our behalf. As part of the contractual agreements, each company takes on the responsibility for any risk involved whilst in operation. For this reason, any claims which arise from incidents (involving their own vehicles and drivers) are dealt with by them. We therefore do not hold this information.

Please break that figure down by award and date (eg £x on 21 Jan 2013). I don't need details of the recipients but I would like to know what happened in each accident.

As advised in response to question 1 above we do not issue awards for such claims as we do not directly operate the bus services. Accidents on buses are classed as insurance claims, and it is usually the operator’s insurance company who pays any compensation.

Additionally, please tell me how many accidents have been logged in moving buses in the same period in total.

Please note that we sort this information by various fields, however, we don’t have a sub category for incidents logged on moving buses. Our system primarily collects accident data which is sent to the operator to investigate.
