We answered

TfL Ref: 3807-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 10 March 2020 asking for information about the number of weekly completed journeys on the London Underground between 1 January and 10 March 2020 broken down by line.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Unfortunately we do not hold demand data on specific lines at a daily level. All the demand data we have is ticketing-based - our ticketing data allows us to see the number of people entering and exiting a tube station, however this doesn’t tell us which tube line they actually used where there are stations with multiple services (e.g. someone tapping in at Stratford could use the Central, Jubilee, Overground, DLR, TfL Rail, Greater Anglia etc). Equally, people interchanging onto the Central line within their journey will not be picked up in our ticketing data

We do publish some passenger journey data on our website which you may be interested in - the number of passenger entry and exits per station (our ‘Station Annual Counts’ dataset) which is available on our website for 2017 with the 2018 and 2019 data available from the end of the March 2020: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance#on-this-page-2.

We also publish data for the number of journeys between the two stations on typical days on our open data pages.. 2018 data is currently available with 2019 data available from Summer 2020.

Files which give the typical line load (line boarders) per line and mode are also available at the same location: http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/.

Please note the Government has announced a series of measures to tackle the Coronavirus. It is essential for London, and in particular for all critical workers, that we continue to provide a safe transport network that enables them to make the journeys they need to.

In current circumstances, we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.

Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
