FOI request detail

Bus Fleet

Request ID: FOI-3366-1920
Date published: 24 February 2020

You asked

As part of a short article writing, we will deal with the topic of renewable energies and biofuels. Therefore our choice fell on the London-based project of the double decker busses driven by a fuel mixture containing coffee grounds (by bio-bean). As a part of this article, we would like to calculate the fuel savings that could be possible by supplying the whole bus fleet with such biofuels. Therefore we would like to ask you some questions: - What is the overall consumption of diesel for the whole bus fleet? - How is it splitted (share of total consumption for hybrid busses and diesel busses)? - Is this project still undergoing? - How much do you pay for a litre of diesel (average value)? Of course we will provide you with the finished article if you want so. Thank you in advance for tanking time to answer those questions!

TfL Ref: 3366-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29 January 2020 asking for information about our buses.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.  Your questions and our replies are as below:

- What is the overall consumption of diesel for the whole bus fleet?

Please see table below which shows current (2019/2020) annual diesel usage in Litres for single (Diesel) and double decks (hybrid).

SD

67 597 961.29

DD

131 034 824.98

Total

198 632 786

Total (rounded)

200 000 000

- How is it splitted (share of total consumption for hybrid busses and diesel busses)?

We have approximated this based on the proportion of these vehicles in the fleet. The most recent fleet data is published at https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-fleet-data-and-audits. This will be refreshed in July this year.

- Is this project still undergoing?

This was not our project but an initiative by Bio-Bean and Shell. Operators make their own arrangements for procuring fuel for their London and/or UK fleets. Some may be purchased through Shell and include a proportion of biodiesel, extracted from chip fat oil, tallow or, in the case of Bio-Bean, from waste coffee.

- How much do you pay for a litre of diesel (average value)?

We do not hold data on the exact fuel rates each bus operators pay as this is held by the operators themselves.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
