Tube Train Reliability & Maintenance Costs
Request ID: FOI-3074-1819
Date published: 08 March 2019
You asked
Do you have any available data on a breakdown of reliability of trains & maintenance costs of London Underground rolling stock broken down by individual train? Please could this be broken down by year for the past 3 years.
If costs by individual train data is not available then overall per line costs and reliability of trains record is acceptable. However this will have to include quantity of trains worked on in that period. Feel free to use train data available on the Rolling Stock asset list.
The definition of reliability is a list of trains that have had faults or broken down and needed repairs during the 3 year period.
This is to access the reliability of individual train stock.
Thank you in advance

TfL Ref: FOI-3074-1819
Thank you for your request received by TfL on 13th February 2019 asking for information about the reliability and maintenance costs of Underground trains for the last 3 years.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some the information you require – although it is not held by indiviual train as asked for in the in the first part of your request. Rather, the information is held by line. The information is provided in the table below. Note that reliability is measured in “mean distance between failures” (MDBF), and the table also shows the number of corrective work orders carried out on the fleet (although note that for the Northern Line this work is outsourced to Alstom and TfL does not hold the information). The financial figures given are the values associated with running maintenance (level 1-3 maintenance and remedial works) - spend on enhancements or overhauls carried out during those years is not included.

Note that through the Deep Tube Upgrade Programme 250 new trains for the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City lines will be provided, with the first new trains serving the Piccadilly line from 2024. More information about the Programme can be found on our website here: https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/tube-improvements/what-we-are-doing/improving-the-trains
Specifically on the Central Line, TfL is investing £356 million as part of the Central Line Improvement Programme, which includes the replacement of old traction motors on the fleet to help reduce delays on the line. These improvements will be complete by 2024. In the longer term, TfL will replace the current 92' Stock train fleet with the next generation of trains as part of the Deep Tube Upgrade Programme referenced above.
