We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-3024-1718

Thank you for your email received by us on 23 January 2018 asking for information about delays.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

There were 1.38bn journeys made on the London Underground in 2016/17. In 2016 we cut delays by nearly 38 per cent since 2011. A far-reaching programme to deliver this improvement has included:

  • The sustained investment in modernisation of Tube signalling, track and trains. On the Victoria, Jubilee and Northern lines, reliability has improved by 74 per cent, 67 per cent and 40 per cent respectively.

  • New techniques to predict when maintenance on the lines is required to prevent unexpected equipment failure and delays to customers.

  • Working with the British Transport Police to respond to incidents more quickly by getting engineers to incidents under 'blue light' conditions.

  • Having engineering and operations staff in one control centre to speed up incident recovery times.

  • The installation of covers on train passenger alarms, which has significantly reduced the number of accidental activations.

Please see the information you have requested attached, noting the following caveats:

  • The data table contains all train service disruptions that have caused a direct delay to the service, for all lines across the network.
  • The information includes date, time, delay and line where the incident occurred.
  • The data contains information about train delays and suspensions only and does not include cancellations from depot and station specific items as these do not cause a direct service delay.
  • The delays listed are those that have been calculated during the initial capture of the incident by service control as well as any subsequent amendments following detailed reviews and use of management information systems.

Please note that we also regularly publish London Underground performance data on our website:
