Signal failures
Request ID: FOI-2974-1718
Date published: 12 February 2018
You asked
You seem to have a lot of signal failures. I'd like to request the figures for signal failures on an annual basis on your network. If possible, could they also be broken down by line?
We answered
TfL Ref: 2974-1718
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16 January 2018 asking for information about the number of signal failures on the London Underground network.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
In order to reduce signal failures across the network we are replacing old track, improving drainage, cleaning block joints at regular intervals and improving the insulation between track sections using a new type of rail joint. We are also upgrading signalling systems, including a £5.4 billion programme to modernise the signalling on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. This will result in greater capacity and frequency, as well as improved reliability and customer information on the sub-surface network.
The figures in the attachment reflect the number of times that an issue was initially diagnosed as a signal failure. However, upon investigation, some of these issues are found to either be track faults, power failures or instances of human error rather than signal failures.
Please note that we also regularly publish data on our website the number of signal failures that resulted in a delay of over two minutes: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
