Fixed 'Gatso' Speed Cameras on the A406

Request ID: FOI-2948-2324
Date published: 11 December 2023

You asked

Regarding the fixed Gatso Speed cameras on the A406 (or similar, i.e. they do not record the average speed) 1) What is the KSI criteria in that location in order to install a permanent speed camera? 2) What is the criteria in that location in order to remove a speed camera? 3) The speed following speed cameras on the A406 eastbound: i) On the A406 eastbound, after waterworks roundabout ii) On the slip road off the A406 eastbound to Charlie Brown roundabout iii) On the A406 eastbound, after the M11 slip road, parallel to the camera above iv) On the A406 eastbound, after the slip road to the A12 v) On the A406 eastbound, just before the slip road to the Ilford exit When were these cameras installed? How many KSI since they were installed? How much revenue have you made from these specific cameras since they were installed? Where can we send a request to have these cameras removed ? 4) On the A406 Eastbound AND westbound between the Ilford and Barking exits, there are still white road markings where there were previously speed cameras located. The speed cameras have been removed but the white markings are still there. Drivers are seeing the white markings and they presume there is a speed camera - resulting in slamming their brakes on and nearly causing an accident. This has happened multiple times. Why have these white road markings not been removed? Who is responsible for these road markings? 5) What is the total revenue generated from all speed cameras within London in 2020, 21, 22 and 23? 6) What is the target revenue for TFL for 2024 from all speed cameras?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2948-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16 November 2023 asking for information about speed cameras on the A406.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require.

Specifically you asked:

Regarding the fixed Gatso Speed cameras on the A406 (or similar, i.e. they do not record the average speed)

  1. What is the KSI criteria in that location in order to install a permanent speed camera?

As provided below, the cameras you have enquired about were installed between 2006 and 2009. Our standard retention period for most information is seven years, and therefore we no longer hold this information. Cameras have typically been installed in London at locations where people have been killed or seriously injured (KSI) and where non-compliance has created significant risk due to drivers’ or riders’ speeding or contravening a red light.

  1. What is the criteria in that location in order to remove a speed camera?

There is no set criteria for the removal of a speed camera.

3) The speed following speed cameras on the A406 eastbound:

i) On the A406 eastbound, after waterworks roundabout

This camera was installed on 22/03/2006.

ii) On the slip road off the A406 eastbound to Charlie Brown roundabout

This camera was installed on 08/05/2009.

iii) On the A406 eastbound, after the M11 slip road, parallel to the camera above

This camera was installed on 27/06/2014.

iv) On the A406 eastbound, after the slip road to the A12

This camera was installed on 22/11/2006.

v) On the A406 eastbound, just before the slip road to the Ilford exit

This camera was installed on 29/05/2009.

When were these cameras installed?

Please refer to the answers to Questions 3(i) to 3(v) above. Please note that the information provided is based on the description of the locations of the cameras you have provided in your request.

How many KSI since they were installed?

Please note a 500m radius around the nearest speed camera for each stretch of road listed below was used. The KSI figures found within this radius for each stretch of road are provided below:

  1. On the A406 eastbound, after waterworks roundabout –    6 KSI collisions
  2. On the slip road off the A406 eastbound to Charlie Brown roundabout –   1 KSI collision
  3. On the A406 eastbound, after the M11 slip road, parallel to the camera above –   2 KSI collisions
  4. On the A406 eastbound, after the slip road to the A12 –   3 KSI collisions
  5. On the A406 eastbound, just before the slip road to the Ilford exit –    3 KSI collisions

How much revenue have you made from these specific cameras since they were installed?

Please refer to the answer to question 5 below.

Where can we send a request to have these cameras removed ?

Any concerns about safety cameras should be communicated through the TfL website. Our help and contact page is accessible using the following link: https://tfl.gov.uk/help-and-contact/contact-us-about-streets-and-other-road-issues

TfL are the Highway Authority for this road. There could be a wide range of reasons as to why the white lines have not been removed. This information has been passed to our Asset Operations team for onward action. Any future road issues should be reported via the TfL website. Our help and contact page is accessible using the link provided above.

5) What is the total revenue generated from all speed cameras within London in 2020, 21, 22 and 23?

We do not hold this information as all revenue from Fixed Penalty Notices and Court fines goes to the Treasury.

6) What is the target revenue for TFL for 2024 from all speed cameras?”

There is no target revenue for speed cameras in London.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
