Increased noise from Victoria line
Request ID: FOI-2718-1920
Date published: 09 January 2020
You asked
Dear Sirs,
I live in Barnsbury Street, N1 1PW. The house is above the Victoria line between Kings Cross St. Pancras and Highbury & Islington.
Until earlier this year noise from trains running up and down the tracks was audible but at a low level. Earlier this year the noise has increased dramatically so that it is disruptive in the basement of the house and clearly audible throughout each time a train passes.
Please let me know:
1) What changes have been made to the Victoria line in this area that has resulted in the greatly increased noise levels?
2) What plans does TfL have to reduce the noise level.

Our ref: FOI-2718-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 6 December 2019 asking for information about noise from the Victoria line.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. You asked:
1) What changes have been made to the Victoria line in this area that has resulted in the greatly increased noise levels?
2) What plans does TfL have to reduce the noise level.
There is an ongoing construction/delivery of track renewals between Highbury and Islington and Kings Cross. This incorporates four ongoing projects including the replacement of all rails and sleepers on this section of track. We are sorry that this has led to you experiencing increased noise levels. I can confirm that at this stage approximately 98% of the rails and sleepers in this section have been replaced with the remainder due to be completed in the near future. We would expect that upon completion of this work the noise levels will sufficiently reduce.
However if you continue to experience undue noise levels and remain concerned, please contact us via the following link and we can look into this further for you: https://tfl.gov.uk/help-and-contact/contact-us-about-tube-and-rail
If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely,
