HI I would like to know the number of times trains were taken out of operational service in the last calendar year from the date of this request due to technical problems.

We answered

TfL Ref: 2319-1718

Thank you for your email received by us on 16 November 2017 and your clarification email of 20 November asking for information about the number of times London Underground trains were taken out of operational service in the last calendar year from 1 January 2017 to 16 November 2017 due to technical problems.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

The number of times a train has been withdrawn due to technical issues or other problems with the train fleet from 01/01/2017 to 16/11/2017 is 2,862. Please note that this figure includes instances of the same train being withdrawn from service on more than one occasion due to an recurring issue.

London Underground operates around 3629 trains per week, or 162,000 in the period covered by your request. Therefore for comparison purposes, the 2862 as above constitutes only around 0.6% of the total trains which have been in service during this period

You may wish to look at the LU Performance Almanac which we publish and which is available using the following link    https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/underground-services-performance

As part of our ongoing investment in the Underground network and to meet the needs of London's rapidly growing population, we are continuing to invest in and improve our services. New Tube for London is a programme that will introduce 250 new Tube trains on the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City lines, which will reduce failures and deliver faster, more frequent and more reliable journeys.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
