Details of the proposal for walking/cycle scheme from Vauxhall Bridge to Hyde Park Corner via Belgrave Rd, and Belgrave Square

In July 2014 we consulted on proposals for Cycle Superhighway 5 (CS5) between Oval and Belgravia. CS 5 provides a high quality and very well used cycle facility extending from south east London into Westminster via Vauxhall Bridge. The section of the route between Oval and Pimlico was constructed in 2015, including a two-way segregated cycle track across Vauxhall Bridge which provides an onward connection to Cycle Superhighway 8 on Millbank.

The proposals for the section of CS5 between Pimlico and Belgravia were developed in partnership with Westminster City Council (WCC). Three alignment options were included in the 2014 public consultation for this section, which were Belgrave Road/Eccleston Street, St George’s Street/Elizabeth Street, and Sutherland Street/Ebury Street. More information can be found here: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/cycling/cs5-inner/.

From the southern end of Vauxhall Bridge Road there was an intention to take the route along WCC roads to Belgrave Square. This section of the route raised local objections and has not been progressed.

There are active discussions with WCC and other stakeholders over extending local cycle provision, especially focussed on design work focussed around Victoria Station which is considered a barrier to cycling currently.

Details of the proposal for walking/cycle and Bus lane scheme for the Strand,

The Strand / Aldwych scheme is led by Westminster City Council. This has been consulted in (early stages), but is still a live scheme. WCC are progressing the scheme and more details can be found here: https://strandaldwych.org/

Details of the proposal for walking/cycle scheme Lambeth Bridge north Side and Millbank

In 2012 we consulted on proposals to make changes to Lambeth Bridge Roundabout. These proposals were not supported so we focused our resources on developing more substantial proposals. Information on the 2012 proposals and consultation can be found here.

During spring 2017, in response to a fatal cycle/HGV collision, we made changes to the Millbank / Lambeth Bridge roundabout to reduce speeds and improve lane discipline. The changes were a variation of those originally proposed in 2012. Information about these 2017 changes can be found here.

They involved:

· Widening the footways and extending traffic islands to reduce traffic speeds and provide more space for pedestrians

· Raised zebra crossings on all four sides of the junction to slow traffic on the approach to the roundabout

· Installation of clearer lane markings at the roundabout

We consulted on more transformational plans for this same junction as well as the wider area involving Lambeth Bridge and the junction to the south of Lambeth Bridge, Lambeth Palace Road / Albert Embankment / Lambeth Road between June and August 2017. Publication of the consultation response report is planned for the first quarter of 2020. The report will detail the consultation responses, any resulting changes to the plans and the proposed way forward. Information on these proposals (and, when published, the consultation report) can be found here.
