Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 December 2022 asking for information about Diesel Private Hire Vehicles.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for the following information:
Please supply the total diesel private hire vehicles, licensed by TfL.
Please confirm if brand new diesel cars can be licensed as private hire vehicles.
The latest fuel type figures we have for private hire vehicles are from June 2022 and at that time there were:
26,401 diesel only private hire vehicles
82,277 licensed private hire vehicles in total
New diesel vehicles cannot be licensed as private hire vehicles.
Since 1 January 2020 all private hire vehicles (PHVs) licensed for the first time must meet the following emission requirements:
PHVs under 18 months old must be zero emission capable (ZEC) and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard when licensed for the first time
PHVs over 18 months old must have a Euro 6 (petrol or diesel) engine when licensed for the first time
Please note that from 1 January 2023 all PHVs licensed for the first time must be ZEC and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard.
