Our ref: FOI-2162-2021/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26 January 2021 asking for information about bus drivers convicted of careless/ dangerous driving.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. Unfortunately we do not hold the information you require.

Please could I have the following data from 2018, 2019, 2020 split by year:

a) How many bus drivers on TFL routes were convicted of driving without due care and attention?

b) How many of those were barred from working again / permanently fired?

c) How many bus drivers on TFL routes were convicted of dangerous driving?

d) How many of those were barred from working again / permanently fired?

e) How many bus drivers on TFL routes were convicted of causing death by dangerous driving?

f) How many of those were barred from working again / permanently fired?

g) How many bus drivers on TFL routes were convicted of causing death by driving without due care and attention?

h) How many of those were barred from working again / permanently fired?

i) How many current bus drivers on TFL routes have road offence convictions?

As bus drivers are employees of private bus operators their personnel records are held by those companies and we do not hold data on individuals’ court appearances or convictions.

However, all bus operators must adhere to Department for Transport licensing requirements and will also have staff conduct processes and apply these if employees are suspected of, or found to have failed to meet the standards expected of them in the course of their duties, including not complying with the Highways Code. If a driver were convicted of dangerous driving, they would most likely face instant dismissal and not be able to return to work for the period of their ban or longer.

TfL and our bus operators expect high standards from front-line staff and additionally support their professional development with training in areas including road safety and customer service.

j) According to TFL's data, how many avoidable bus collision deaths have there been (with the fault attributed to driver error, carelessness, dangerousness) since 2015.

Bus safety data, including those involving fatalities can be viewed at https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-safety-data.

Whilst we do sometimes receive information from either the police or bus operators which makes direct reference to the driver being prosecuted, we do not always receive information on the outcome of incidents, and therefore this doesn’t necessarily mean that those with no reference to prosecution didn’t contain aspects where the driver could have been at fault. We therefore do not hold this information.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
