Bus Usage Data

Request ID: FOI-2160-2324
Date published: 19 October 2023

You asked

Dear TFL How many passengers have used: Route 72/N72 Route 283 Route 485 Route 209 Former School Route 609 Route 419 Route 533 Route 33/N33 In a daily basis from around 2016 to present day I also want archived bus timetables & the bus timetables now! I would want Journey Statistics such as if a bus was curtailed or diverted. (This can be done, with what vehicle was where at that specific time) What route used what bus stand. How many people used Hammersmith Bridge when it was open to buses & cars & how many people use it now! I want this information as because I live near Hammersmith Bridge, I just want to see what the statices for each bus route was like. This will be private information that only I would have access too. I will not send this information out! In regards to the individual bus routes, please could I have this in a document & Maybe have a map too of the bus routes stating where they went and what stops they served. Thank you for reading this. Please let me know the response! Clarification received 25/09/2023: Re Hammersmith Bridge aspect: So the info, I want is when the bridge was open, how many people walked over the bridge Then how many people used the bus to travel over the bridge. The timeframe is 2016 - 2019 And fastforward to now, how many people use the bridge (walking) Timeframe is 2019 – Present I also would like a detailed spreadsheet or PDF file of the bus routes that crossed Hammersmith Bridge Timeframe: 2016 - 2019 I would also like, what routes were popular: 2016 – 2019 Then what routes are popular now: 2019 – Present Finally I would like, detailed bus maps of all the routes that have crossed Hammersmith Bridge (where the bus route started & finished – also would like curtailment points as to where the route curtailed when it would terminate early!) Time period for all of this: 2016 – Present

TfL Ref: FOI-2160-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19th September 2023 asking for bus usage data, as clarified on 25th September 2023.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

How many passengers have used:

Route 72/N72
Route 283
Route 485
Route 209
Former School Route 609
Route 419
Route 533
Route 33/N33

In a daily basis from around 2016 to present day

I also want archived bus timetables & the bus timetables now!

I would want Journey Statistics such as if a bus was curtailed or diverted. (This can be done, with what vehicle was where at that specific time)

What route used what bus stand.

How many people used Hammersmith Bridge when it was open to buses & cars & how many people use it now!

I want this information as because I live near Hammersmith Bridge, I just want to see what the statices for each bus route was like.

This will be private information that only I would have access too. I will not send this information out!

In regards to the individual bus routes, please could I have this in a document & Maybe have a map too of the bus routes stating where they went and what stops they served.“

On 25th September 2023 you clarified the requests about the Hammersmith Bridge as follows:

So the info, I want is when the bridge was open, how many people walked over the bridge.

Then how many people used the bus to travel over the bridge. The timeframe is 2016 - 2019

And fast forward to now, how many people use the bridge (walking) Timeframe is 2019 – Present

I also would like a detailed spreadsheet or PDF file of the bus routes that crossed Hammersmith Bridge Timeframe: 2016 - 2019

I would also like, what routes were popular: 2016 – 2019

Then what routes are popular now: 2019 – Present

Finally I would like, detailed bus maps of all the routes that have crossed Hammersmith Bridge (where the bus route started & finished – also would like curtailment points as to where the route curtailed when it would terminate early!) Time period for all of this: 2016 – Present”.

I am afraid it is not possible to source all of the information that is held in relation to your request within the costs limit for responding to cases, as set out under section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act. Under section 12, TfL is not obliged to provide information if it would cost more than £450 to determine if that information is held, and to then locate, retrieve or extract it from elsewhere. This is calculated at a rate of £25 per hour, equivalent to 18 hours work. In this instance the exemption applies because of the amount of information being requested - both in terms of the number of different questions that would require input from numerous different teams, and the fact it spans a 7 year period.

In order to bring your request within the costs limit you may wish to narrow its scope to focus on the information that is of most importance to you. However, before considering any refined request I would suggest that you first review the wealth of information that can already be found on the TfL website about our bus services. In particular, I would point you to the following:

https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/timetables/ - current bus timetables can be found here;

https://tfl.gov.uk/maps/bus?intcmp=40401 – bus routes and maps can be found here;

https://tfl.gov.uk/maps_/bus-spider-maps - bus spider maps can be found here;

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/buses-performance-data - bus performance data can be found here, which may be of interest.

Please note that we do not keep old versions of timetables, given the number of routes in operation and the fact they are updated so frequently. Once an update is made it overwrites what was previously held in the system.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
