Date published: 22 September 2023

You asked

Good morning, I hope this finds email finds you well. I am carrying out research on road restrictions affecting large vehicles specifically in the London area. I kindly wanted to ask if you have a spreadsheet or data regarding all low bridges, width and height road restrictions and any other roads in London where larger vehicle e.g Luton vans are not permitted to go through. If you are not able to provide this information, could you kindly me direct to the right place. Kind regards

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-2039-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12th September 2023 asking for information about road restrictions in London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act  and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I kindly wanted to ask if you have a spreadsheet or data regarding all low bridges, width and height road restrictions and any other roads in London where larger vehicle e.g Luton vans are not permitted to go through.”

I am afraid that TfL does not hold the requested information.

Note that in terms of road management in London, the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN - sometimes known as the ‘red routes’) only constitute about 5% of London’s roads, with the other 95% managed by local authorities. More information about the TLRN can be found on our website here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/red-routes

The information we do hold about restrictions on London’s roads - be they in relation to the TLRN or any other roads - will not comprehensively cover the entirety of London. Furthermore, this information has not been collated before and could only be done so at disproportionate cost.

That said, TfL does have access to this data via the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement with the Ordnance Survey (see here: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/customers/public-sector/public-sector-geospatial-agreement) but we do not “hold” that data for the purposes of FOI nor are we permitted to share it.

Yoi may therefore wish to contact the Ordnance Survey directly to enquire about gaining access to their database.

It is also possible that London Councils may be able to assist with some information. You can contact them at [email protected]

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
