Car survey data from 2013

Request ID: FOI-1858-2021
Date published: 23 December 2020

You asked

I would like further information on a survey that was completed by tfl in 2013/2014 on the number of cars owned by each household. I would like to know: 1) How the following survey was conducted? e.g was it emailed, completed at train stations etc. 2) How were people chosen to complete the survey? E.g did you target people who had used the tfl site recently? 3) How did you ensure it was completed by a fair sample of car owners and non car owners? 4) What were the numbers who completed the survey for Islington & Hackney. I have the %’s of households who do not own cars in both boroughs but I want to know actual numbers. E.g 100 people completed in Hackney, 50 people completed for Islington. 5) Who analysed the data? 6) Over what period was the survey completed? 7) Have you since revisited the same survey after this date? The survey I am referencing is 8 How many cars are there in London and who owns them? We answered

TfL Ref 1858-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14 December 2020 asking for information about a survey which TfL conducted in 2013 around car ownership.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

The data in the document comes from our London Travel Demand Survey (LTDS). There is more information on LTDS on the TfL website:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/about-tfl/how-we-work/planning-for-the-future/consultations-and-surveys#on-this-page-1

Our answers to the questions you’ve asked are as follows:

1: The survey is completed face-to-face in households by trained interviewers

2: It's a random sample of all London residents

3: It's a random sample, so will include all London residents. The sample is then weighted and expanded to be representative of the London population.

4: In 2011/12, 177 households were sampled in Hackney, with 196 in Islington

5: The data was analysed by the Strategic Analysis team in City Planning at TfL

6: The survey is completed every financial year (April to March), and has been running since 2005/06.

7: The survey has been running continuously since 2005/06
