TfL Ref: FOI-1770-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 21st October 2022 asking for the contact details of the TfL department that governs and manages traffic speed zone signage.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Please can I be supplied the contact details (i.e, name(s) and email address(es)) of those who govern and manage the traffic speed zone signage in the TfL.”
Note that for the majority of roads in London the signage is the responsibility of local authorities. TfL’s involvement is restricted to the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN - sometimes referred to as the ‘red routes’ - see here for more information, including maps showing where the red routes operate: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/red-routes). As you can see, the TLRN only accounts for about 5% of London’s roads. Note also that the Metropolitan Police (MPS) advise on the signage layout they require for traffic speed zones, and TfL implements signs on the TLRN as required under request by the MPS. If the interest behind your enquiry is related to signage requirements for a site it would be better addressed by the MPS.
To address your specific questions, at TfL there are two teams that are involved in the implementation and maintenance of such signage - our “Network Management and Resilience - Asset Operations” team, and the “Project and Programme Delivery” team. There are numerous individuals who work across these two teams. The direct contact details of staff is exempt from disclosure under section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, the exemption that protects against the unfair release of personal data. However, note that anyone wishing to contact TfL can do so via the following page of our website:
