TfL Ref: 1503-2425

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 August 2024 asking for information about speed camera requests.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Your specific questions and our replies are as follows:

  1. Please can you tell me: through what means should third parties (be they the public, MPs or Local Authorities) ask TFL to consider installing a speed camera in a specific location?
Members of the public can submit requests/concerns via the TfL website. If they are concerned about a speeding issue, they can also talk to their local borough council. A speed camera is not always the most appropriate intervention and it could be that the layout of the road needs modifying if there is indeed an issue with speed. Local boroughs can also request mobile speed enforcement in their area from TfL and the Met Police if there are local concerns about a particular area. Members of the public may also want to consider contacting the police about Community Roadwatch which is another tool available to tackle speed in the local area. More information on how to do this, and about the mobile enforcement that borough officers can request can be found here - https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/safety-and-security/road-safety/safety-enforcement-cameras. MPs and Local Authorities may reach out to TfL directly, or through established meetings such as the London Assembly or via the Mayor – it differs on a case by case basis.

2)   Please disclose TFL's guidance that deals with the procedure through which TFL considers the installation of a speeding camera at a given location.
There is no set documented policy that we hold on this. Information about where we have placed speed cameras can be found using the link above.
