FOI request detail

Rotherhithe tunnel cameras

Request ID: FOI-1477-2021
Date published: 10 November 2020

You asked

Hello, Can you confirm what camera the Transport for London has at the entrances and approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel such as: o Average speed enforcement system. o Goods vehicle weight enforcement system. o Traffic monitoring cameras? How long is footage stored on the cameras? How do I go about getting access to the camera footage? Please can you notify me asap? If this can not be released to me can you release this to the police or another party (such as a solicitor)? I am especially looking for camera on Rotherhithe South tunnel exit as i require footage and ideally car registration details of last car to exit this tunnel on the 25/09/2020 between 4.34 and 4.35. It was a blue car which began with registration plate of G (it could also included number of 245 pertained in the digits). There would then been a delay of no cars leaving the South entrance for 3 to 4 minutes. FYI, the tunnel was then closed around 4.50pm given the accident I was involved in. The Police Reference Number is MD/010001356/20. I look forward to hearing from you in the next 20 days. I would appreciate if you could revert back ASAP.

We answered

TfL Ref 1477-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 31 October 2020 asking for information about the cameras at the entrance to the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:  Can you confirm what camera the Transport for London has at the entrances
and approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel such as:

o Average speed enforcement system.
o Goods vehicle weight enforcement system.
o Traffic monitoring cameras?

Please note that the following information relates to TfL owned cameras only.

We have traffic monitoring, Goods vehicle weight enforcement and average speed cameras at Rotherhithe Tunnel.

How long is footage stored on the cameras?

We do not record general traffic monitoring cameras as standard as they are used for real time traffic monitoring only. On occasion some cameras can be recorded, if the operator feels it could add benefit to a safety investigation at the time, but this is rare. Anything that is recorded is auto deleted after 28 days.

The cameras that are in the tunnel itself are recorded and retained for 24 hours. The police are able to request this footage is retained but the request as to be made within 24 hours.

Goods vehicle enforcement cameras only record footage when a contravention is made. This footage can be kept for up to 18 months, however once the penalty charge notice is closed the footage relates to it will often be deleted before the 18 months.

More information on our cameras and how we use them can be found here
