We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-1342-2122
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24th September 2021 asking for information about accidents due to cycle lane division ridges.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Can you kindly let me know the number of injuries/fatalities attributed to cycle Lane division ridges (intermittent raised ridges on cycle Lane edge).”
TfL does not hold the requested data. Our personal injury collision data is sourced from the Police, who record it using theDepartment for Transport(DfT) “STATS20 guidance”. More details on that guidance can be found on the DfT website here:
Incidents involving cycle lane division ridges are not specifically recorded as such by the Police. Such incidents would be captured in the data, but may be recorded as a vehicle hitting an object either “in” or “off” the carriageway, depending on the interpretation of the recording officer. However, this category would also include collisions involving other items such as kerbs, crash barriers or any other object, and it is not possible to distinguish between them. Nor does TfL hold any data about pedestrians tripping on such division ridges.
Notwithstanding the above, the following more general information may be of interest. Data on vehicles hitting an object “off” and “in” the carriageway are available on our website under “collision data extracts”, along with other data on road collisions, here:
