We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-0921-2122
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 6th August 2021 asking for information about the Transport for London Road Network.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“How much money is put a side each year to maintain London’s roads?”
Note that the majority of roads in London are managed by local authorities. TfL is only responsible for managing about 5% of the road network in London, referred to as the ‘Transport for London Road Network’ (TLRN - sometimes known as the ‘red routes’). More information about the TLRN can be found on our website here:
Our forecast spend for 2021/2022 is £136,236,93 for the road assets TfL has responsibility for. This covers assets including: carriageways; footways; street lighting; drainage; bridges and other highway structures; trees and other green estate; road tunnels; pump stations; river piers; bus stops and shelters; bus stations and stands; CCTV and safety cameras; and traffic signals. In addition to the maintenance and cleaning of these assets the budget also covers costs for telecommunication services and software systems, as well as utilities such as electricity and water.
TfL’s roads, tunnel and bus network is the most intensively used transport network in the UK with 3.7 billion road journeys and 2.4 billion bus journeys in a normal year. 80 percent of all journeys happen by road and 30 percent of those journeys are on the TfL road network. Our city supports a £1 trillion pound economy, 30 percent of the entire UK economy.
