FOI request detail

Historical TfL data

Request ID: FOI-0819-2425
Date published: 04 July 2024

You asked

Specifically, we are looking for historical data with hourly and daily statistics from trains and buses across London (e.g. Number of delays , overall capacity, status of different facilities such as the number of lifts and how many were out of order, ongoing construction projects, etc). From what we were able to gather, the API only provides current status rather than historical data. Is that type of historical data available to the public? And if so, how can we acquire it? CLARIFICATION By historical data, I mean data from the January of 2023 through to May of 2024. At the moment, the API only seems to have data for the current day rather than data that is backdated over the previous years. If possible, I would like hourly or daily data from train stations and bus stops about their facilities and performance. For example, for a station like Blackfriars, I would like data on the number of bathrooms and lifts it has, whether or not those facilities are functioning or under maintenance that day, how busy the station is in terms of its capacity, the number of trains that were delayed or cancelled that day, whether or not there were any notable accidents or criminal incidents that day, etc.

Thank you for your clarified request which we received on 14 June 2024, asking for transport data and statistics from January 2023 to May of 2024.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You specifically asked:

We are looking for historical data with hourly and daily statistics from trains and buses across London (e.g. Number of delays , overall capacity, status of different facilities such as the number of lifts and how many were out of order, ongoing construction projects, etc).

Unfortunately, we do no hold historical data. As you already know live predictions data is available from our Unified API. Information on available lifts is published at our station facilities data. However, this does not contain information on how many lifts were out of service.

Information about construction projects is published on the TfL website here: Improvements & projects - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)

We hold station facilities data, but this does not cover bus stops and performance information.

Information about the number of toilets and whether they are in service, is available in our station facilities data and live station status information

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

We provide data about how busy stations are at different times of day across a typical week, but this is in an aggregated form rather than for a specific date.

Incident / crime data is recorded in Electronic Incident Report Forms (EIRFs). In order to provide this data, we would need to review each form to identify the relevant information over the requested period. These reports are created for operational purposes and a substantial amount of work would need to be undertaken for these EIRFS to be devised in a format suitable for public disclosure. Clearly this would impose a significant burden on us in terms of staff time and resources.

We have estimated it would considerably exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 to provide you with a response. Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with a request if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. This is calculated at £25 per hour for every hour spent on the activities described.

The British Transport Police may also hold data about crime. You may want to contact them directly for this information.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
