Request ID: FOI-0522-2223 Date published: 07 June 2022
You asked
Dear Transport for London,
I would like to be sent information that records the number of people who have used the various modes of transportation that Transport for London during the months of March, April, and May for the past 10 years, or at least 5 years if 10 years would take too much time to do.
To be give great clarity on what I'm looking for, I'm trying to find out how many people used:
1. The London Underground
2. Buses
3. Taxis
If other modes of transport were used but not listed above, I would appreciate if the number of users were shared too for those modes of transport.
We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 6 June 2022 asking for information about passenger numbers using various modes of travel over the last ten years.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of some of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.
We do not record passenger data in the format requested as Taxi drivers are not required to share passenger occupancy information with Transport for London.
However, we have in the past conducted surveys to gain further insight into Taxi and Private Hire services and drivers’ working patterns. These are published here on our website: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/taxi-and-private-hire - The Taxi and Private Hire Driver Diary Survey 2016/17, whilst based on very modest sample surveys, may be of interest as it relates to passenger travel in this area.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
