Hi, Hope you are well. I am looking for tube journeys for last month with a breakdown of which lines has been used. I have access to the Public Transport Journeys by Type of Transport however I needed a breakdown of the train lines for the underground. I am using this information to plan for our return to work and get an idea of what services are used the most Vs the services used by our staff. I will be most grateful if you can provide this.

We answered

TfL Ref: 0389-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9 June 2020 asking for information about the number of tube journeys broken down by line for last month (May 2020).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Please find below the estimated number of journeys for May 2020, broken down by London Underground line. The equivalent number of London Underground journeys for May 2019 was 116.8 million so the current figures show a drop of around 94% from last year to this.

This information has been estimated using ticketing data (entries and exits) from London Underground stations. Where multiple lines serve a station, we are unable to associate entries or exits with specific lines, and so have aligned each station to just one line. Attached is a breakdown of which stations correspond to which line.

As London recovers and restrictions gradually lifted, the number of journeys taking place on our network is changing in response. We have published information on our website, that we hope will be helpful.

We are doing all we can to ensure a safe transport network, but we need businesses to help us enable social distancing wherever possible by keeping the numbers of people travelling on the network down.

Those employees who can continue to work from home should continue to do so. In line with Government advice, please consider all other forms of transport before using public transport.

As an employer you can help us by:

• Enabling employees to follow the latest Government and TfL travel advice

• Reinforcing our travel advice amongst employees (as applicable to your sector/ nature of their work)

• Reducing the frequency of, or retiming, deliveries and servicing trips made by you or your suppliers

Read our full briefing for business for more guidance on how to help London re-open carefully, safely and sustainably, including what guidance to give your staff about returning to work.

Please also keep checking our list of the busiest stations and times to travel during your planning, as we update it regularly. We have recently published information on the busier times at each of stations on the network, which can be found in this section of our website.

Please note the Government has announced a series of measures to tackle the Coronavirus. It is essential for London, and in particular for all critical workers, that we continue to provide a safe transport network that enables them to make the journeys they need to.

In current circumstances, we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.

Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
