Cycling in London training video

Request ID: FOI-0345-2122
Date published: 24 May 2021

You asked

On your TfL YouTube channel there was a video about good cycling tips for safer cycling in London. Sadly, the title of this video has escaped by mind, but I do remember the first few 'slides' within the video showing statistics of cycle incidents within London (2015). Although this may be out of date now, the video does show where cyclists should wait at traffic lights, cycle a door-widths away from parked cars etc. I have been able to find the PDF Images of the 'slides' shown within the video, but it would be great if you could send me a copy of said video as it includes the animated cyclist and motorist if memory serves and explains everything regarding road and cycle safety in a down-to-earth manner! https://www.think.gov.uk/campaign/cycle-safety-tips-2015/

Thank you for your request of 18th May 2021 asking for a copy of a video from 2015 about cycling in London.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I am afraid that TfL’s rights to use the video in question have expired. Your request is therefore being refused under section 43 of the Freedom of Information Act (the ‘commercial prejudice’ exemption) on the basis that it would cost TfL to renegotiate and renew those rights. This cost cannot be justified as there is no particular pubic interest in doing so, not least because the material in question has been superseded by more up to date information on the same subject. TfL has published a new online Cycle Skills course, which covers everything you need to know about cycling safely and responsibly in London including road position, sharing the road and riding in a group.  There are four quick and easy modules which all take less than five minutes. This is published on our website via the following link, along with other information about safe cycling:

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
