Date published: 17 June 2020

You asked

I am a student from the University of Sheffield and would like to use data published by TfL for analytical purposes for my Master's dissertation. I would like to enquire whether it is possible to obtain detailed data, categorised by local authorities in London, for the following: - Number of trips made by public transport per capita - Number of public transport journeys operated - Punctuality/reliability rate of public transport services - Car ownership rate Please direct me to the right person/department if this is not the right place to request statistical data from TfL, thank you.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0295-2021  and FOI-0392-2021

Thank you for your requests received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29th May 2020 and 11th June 2020 asking for various pieces of data at the local authority level.

Your requests have been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I would like to enquire whether it is possible to obtain detailed data, categorised by local authorities in London, for the following:

- Number of trips made by public transport per capita

- Number of public transport journeys operated

- Punctuality/reliability rate of public transport services

- Car ownership rate”.

And;

I would like to add a few more pieces of data to request:

- Percentage of all trips made by public transport, and by non-motorised transport (i.e. cycling and walking), by local authority/borough in Greater London

- Vehicle miles operated of all public transport routes passing through the local authority/borough, by local authority/borough in Greater London.”

I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

In respect of your first request, please see the attached spreadsheet. This addresses points one and four. We do not hold the other data by local borough.

In respect of your second request, the first question (along with a wealth of other information) can be found in the Travel in London reports (and corresponding datasets) available on our website here:

https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/travel-in-london-reports

Note that the borough LIP indicators report on this page has detailed information broken down by borough, found here:

http://content.tfl.gov.uk/borough-local-implementation-plan-performance-indicators.pdf

We do not hold vehicle miles operated of all public transport routes passing through the local authority/borough, by local authority/borough in Greater London.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

On a more general matter, please note that the Government has announced a series of measures to tackle the coronavirus. It is essential for London that we continue to provide a safe transport network for essential journeys.

In current circumstances, we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.

Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
