You asked

Business enterprise product development survey. We are a group of master’s students from Newcastle University from a range of courses including Renewable energy, Transport planning & Business management, Environmental consultancy and Civil engineering. We have developed an idea for a product to be marketed towards train operators to increase the sustainability of operations. To help in proving this need exists and the feasibility of our product, we hope you are able to take the time to answer a short questionnaire. We appreciate that you may not wish to provide figures for some questions, but we can also assure you that the answers to this questionnaire will not leave the University. 1. What are the current steps in place to reduce energy usage? 2. Does TFL value promoting a greener image? 3. Are TFL willing to invest in new energy technologies? 4. How much money is spent on electricity? 5. How fast do their trains pass through underground sections? 6. How fast does wind get pushed through the tunnels? 7. Are there restrictions to what equipment can be placed in passenger platform areas? (e.g. Installed on walls/ceilings)

 TfL Ref: 0155-1819

Thank you for your email received by us on 18 April 2018 asking for information about energy usage and our environmental policies for the purposes of your academic related research.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our information access policy. Ican confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked for the following:

1. What are the current steps in place to reduce energy usage?

2. Does TFL value promoting a greener image?

3. Are TFL willing to invest in new energy technologies?

Information about our sustainable transport strategies and targets for the future can be found in the ‘green transport’ section of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, plus Transport for London’s (TfL) Draft Environmental Strategy and our Environmental Reports.

An overview of our energy/carbon reductions schemes can also be found in our Business Plan. The Annual Report and Statement of Accounts, as well as our Budget and Business Plans details our expenditure on environmentally based initiatives, which can be viewed via the following links:

4. How much money is spent on electricity?

Our organisation’s electricity spend is published here: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-contracts-greater-than-5k.pdf

5. How fast do their trains pass through underground sections?

The average train speed is 33kph, as confirmed at: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/about-tfl/what-we-do/london-underground/facts-and-figures

6. How fast does wind get pushed through the tunnels?

This is known as the ‘piston effect’; a number of academic texts and research papers provide this information that can be located via an online search tool.

7. Are there restrictions to what equipment can be placed in passenger platform areas? (e.g. Installed on walls/ceilings)

An example of the content and design of structures used to enclose London Underground platforms can be found in the Station Design document about the Northern line extension’s Battersea and Nine Elms stations at: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/nle-twa-environmental-statement-volume-iie-appendix-m-design-and-access-statement-part-2-a17-6b.pdf
