FOI request detail

A40-A406-A316-A2-A13

Request ID: FOI-0147-2324
Date published: 15 May 2023

You asked

Follow-up to TfL Ref: 3434-2223. Thanks for your email. I am sorry about the delay in replying, Unfortunately, although fatalities are indeed listed, as you say, on your website, as I have discovered in the past, they are not listed with sufficient clarity for me to identify, with any certainty, whether the fatalities happed on the roads covered by the pilot average speed camera schemes on the A40, A406, A316, A2 and A13, or close by. In the past, because of this problem, the figures I am anxious to update have always been supplied under the FoI route. Let me thank you for your help and any effort you take to let me have the information. Much thanks.

We answered

TfL Ref: 0147-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14 April 2023 asking for information about road collisions, following your previous request for information ref: 3434-2223...

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for:

the number of fatalities, occurring annually, between 2019 and 2022 on the five TfL pilot average speed schemes, namely:

A40between the Polish War Memorial and Paddington Slip Road
A406North Circular Road, between Hanger Lane and Bounds Green Road
A316between the M3 and Staveley Road
A2between the Blackwall Tunnel and Dartford Heath

A13between Canning Town and the Goresbrook Interchange

As mentioned in our previous response, the death of any person on London’s streets is a tragedy. We have adopted an ambitious Vision Zero goal to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London’s transport network. This is described in the Vision Zero Action Plan here: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/road-safety, which sets out a systemic approach to road safety, with improvements to street design, vehicle speeds and compliance, safety behaviours and vehicle designs and technology. Achieving Vision Zero will be a long-term project and, while we have made good progress in recent years, there is still more to do

Please find attached the requested data.

Please also note that for personal injury collisions within the A40, A406, A316, A13 area from January 2019 to end of November 2022, the most recent dataset in relation to 2022 is provisional and subject to change.  .

We can also advise that there were no fatal collisions for the GIS Area A2 between the Blackwall Tunnel and Dartford Heath.

Finally, we would like to confirm that these systems are not pilot sites, they are an established part of London’s safety camera operation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
