About Steps into Work 

Steps into Work (SIW) is a 12-month programme that offers valuable work experience and employability skills training to people who are neurodivergent.

Our programme is delivered in partnership with Shaw Trust, who like us value inclusion, collaboration and work to empower people to achieve their full potential.

Duration: SIW runs for 12 months. It typically starts in September and finishes in August.

Attendance: From Monday to Friday. Usually between the hours of 09:30 - 15:30.

Location: London and flexible working from home.


We're looking for people who are

  • Aged 16+
  • Have neurodevelopmental differences such as mild to moderate learning disabilities, ADHD or autism

What the Steps into Work programme involves

The opportunity to complete three work experience placements, lasting up to 11 weeks across our London offices, stations, piers and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Those aged 18+ can gain experience as a Customer Service Assistant for 8 weeks at one of our Underground stations and complete a NVQ Customer Services in the Rail Industry award.

What qualifications you'll get

You'll have the opportunity to gain accredited practical Work Skills qualification, so you'll feel more confident and prepared to find work.

How you'll be supported

Our partners Shaw Trust will provide you with a Specialist Job Coach to support you at application stage right through to work placement.

Upon successful completion of the Steps into Work programme, your Job Coach will assist you in transitioning into paid employment.

Many of our former students have gone on to gain paid employment in TfL and many other organisations.

How to apply for the programme

Specialist Job Coaches will be on hand throughout the assessment and interview stages to help you. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit Shaw Trust and submit your interest
  2. You will then be contacted by an advisor to discuss your submission 
  3. If the programme is right for you, we'll invite you to an assessment day to complete numeracy, literacy and digital skills tests
  4. If you pass the assessment, we'll invite you to an interview
  5. Up to 24 people will be offered a place to join Steps into Work
