Cost to change the name of Surrey Quays station back to Surrey Docks station

Request ID: FOI-4845-1718
Date published: 22 March 2018

You asked

On Thursday 8th March 2018 at the Canada Water Masterplan event hosted by British Land PLC a senior member of British Land's Team informed attendees that the cost of changing the name of Surrey Quays station back to Surrey Docks station would be around £14,000,000. Please can you provide a) copies of any correspondence between yourselves and British Land PLC (or it's agents) - redacted as necessary - specifically about changing the name of Surrey Quays station back to Surrey Docks station; b) any other information you hold about the costs of changing the name of Surrey Quays station back to Surrey Docks station (if any). Additionally, if time and money allows, can you inform me how much it would approximately cost to change the name of Surrey Quays station back to Surrey Docks station? This request is very much in the public interest because there is widespread support to restore the name back to Surrey Docks. Local residents also cannot believe a simple name change would cost around £14,000,000 - especially if introduced over time and stickers used temporarily etc. The public also do sometimes encounter "fake news" and FOI requests can be very helpful to clarify facts.

We answered

Dear

Our ref: FOI-4845-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 March 2018 asking for information about Surrey Quays station.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Unfortunately we do not hold the information you have requested.

We have not had any correspondence with British Land (or its agents) with respect to changing the name of Surrey Quays station to Surrey Docks station. Further, we have not completed any cost estimates for a name change to Surrey Quays station. Therefore, we are unable to provide a cost estimate.

While there have been no specific cost estimates for this station, experience from other stations highlights that the cost associated with renaming is significant. This is due to the vast range of customer information and operational systems that require updating as a consequence. Changes are not isolated to the station itself, but have wider impacts and network requirements.

Examples of customer information updates include:

·      signage at the station, in the local area and at other stations

·      in train customer information systems

·      in station customer information systems

·      maps of the transport network on which the station appears (Tube maps, bus spider diagrams etc)

Examples of operational system updates include:

·         station identification code changes in signalling systems

·         station name in ticketing and associated systems

·         station name in other retail systems

·         CCTV and Help Point location identification codes

·         updates to all relevant company operating manuals.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss this matter further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely
