We answered
Dear
Our ref: FOI-4843-1718
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 March 2018 asking for information about Camberwell Station.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:
1. Can you confirm when the final Business Case regarding the re-opening of Camberwell Station is likely to be completed?
The business case for Camberwell Railway station is currently awaiting final approval and is expected to be published in the summer this year.
However, in accordance with the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the report as it is subject to a statutory exemption to the right of access to information, under Section 22 of the Act. In this instance the exemption has been applied as the report is intended for future publication.
This exemption is subject to a public interest test, which requires us to assess whether the public interest in applying the exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosure. In this instance, it is considered that the public interest favours the publication of this information, in context and according to the pre-determined schedule, rather than in response to your request, to ensure the information is provided accurately and in an accessible manner.
2. Why there are still so many heavy diesel buses being operated in the Camberwell and Peckham Area?
Both of these areas are densely populated so there is a need to have double decker buses running throughout to meet customer demand. By using double decker buses, we’re helping to reduce the amount of vehicles on the roads, ease traffic and reduce our emissions. Double decker buses gives us the option to carry more passengers as single decker buses will only be able to carry less than half than that of a double decker bus.
We are constantly reviewing the demand in the area and if we see that the demand is falling then buses will be taken off the roads to meet changes in patronage.
You may be interested to know that we are cutting bus emissions significantly by raising the entire bus fleet to the ultra-clean Euro VI engine emission standard between now and 2020 and all areas will benefit from this including Camberwell and Peckham. This change will be achieved through replacement with new buses (which will also need to be hybrid from this year) and retrofitting others with much cleaner exhaust systems.
3. What are the traffic pollution levels for Camberwell and Peckham's main roads on average?
In terms of ongoing air quality monitoring, it is possible to use data from the existing air quality monitoring network (owned primarily by the boroughs) to understand trends across London as a whole, but also to explore the variable trends at individual monitoring stations. Please see this link for more information http://www.londonair.org.uk/london/asp/publicdetails.asp.
Commentary on air quality trends in London is also available from Travel in London report available at http://content.tfl.gov.uk/travel-in-london-report-9.pdf.
However there are many other influences that play a role in determining the air quality of an area picked up by a monitoring station. This includes the locations of monitoring stations, the direction of wind and meteorological conditions and local characteristics.
