FOI request detail

Traffic measuring cables in Bryanston Mews West W1H 2BW

Request ID: FOI-4835-1718
Date published: 20 March 2018

You asked

I am a resident of Bryanston Mews West W1H 2BW. I would be grateful if you could tell me the purpose of the traffic measuring cables in Bryanston Mews West, which appeared yesterday. I have spoken to TFL’s enquiry office (the ref for my enquiry is 1162 9348) and have been told that it is TFL who have laid down the cables. I would like to know the ultimate purpose of the cables being put down (above and beyond the self-evident purpose of counting frequency of cars). If the cables were not laid for TFL’s own purposes, I would like to be told who was the commissioning client or agency, for example Westminster Council.

Our ref: FOI-4835-1718/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9 March 2018 asking for information about Traffic measuring cables in Bryanston Mews West.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

These cables you refer to are known as pneumatic monitoring tubes and are used widely in transport planning and engineering to undertake traffic counts (as you note) and record vehicle speeds.  In some cases piezoelectric sensors and induction loops may also be used to help classify traffic counts by vehicle type.

The monitoring tubes on Bryanston Mews are associated with Westminster City Council’s (WCC) ongoing 20mph speed limit trial and were installed by WCC.  We have contacted WCC and understand that the monitoring tubes are to remain in place for approximately one week.

For more information please visit https://www.westminster.gov.uk/20mph-trials or contact Westminster City Council directly.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
