Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 February 2018 asking for information about speed limiters on buses.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
You asked: How many buses have speed limiters on them to ensure they keep to the speed limit? In particular on the 490 and 285 routes? Also, what is the highest speed of these buses recorded on Hanworth Road, Feltham.
Intelligent Speed Adaptions (ISA) are installed on some buses run by bus operators in London and the surrounding areas. These work by limiting the speed of the bus to that posted locally. Currently 28 buses are fitted with an ISA - 6 on route 183, and 22 on route 222.
There are no plans at this stage to equip buses on routes 285 and 490 with ISAs. Whilst we do have another mechanism to look at the speed of buses, this is only undertaken when there is a specific reason and so we do not currently hold a record of this highest speed of those bus routes on Hanworth Road.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
