Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 21 February 2018 asking for information about breathalyser tests.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
London Underground has a very rigorous drugs and alcohol testing regimes to ensure the safety of our customers and staff. We mainly conduct unannounced testing of Tube drivers, every month at different locations, throughout the whole year. Each location will be tested at least twice a year. Additionally Local Managers test drivers for Post Incident and ‘for cause’ testing if the need arises. 'For cause' tests can be carried out when a manager has a reasonable cause to believe that an employee is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or is unfit for duty because of alcohol or drugs.
The figures for Tube drivers across 2016/17 are as follows:
Unannounced 195 breathalysed tested – Nil Positive
Post Incident 36 breathalysed tested - Nil Positive
For Cause 22 breathalysed tested – Nil Positive
