Status of works to install pedestrian crossing at Chislehurst War Memorial
Request ID: FOI-4458-2324 Date published: 12 March 2024
You asked
Dear sir or madam
TfL controls the traffic lights at Chislehurst War Memorial (crossroads A222 Bromley Road and A208 Centre Common Road). Despite being extremely busy with vehicle traffic and heavily used by vulnerable pedestrians (primary and secondary schoolchildren, elderly people from several local homes) there is no crossing provision whatsoever for pedestrians.
This is contrary to GLA policy.
Please provide an update on or confirm the status of your studies to make provision for the safe crossing of pedestrians at this junction and a target date for implementation of the work.

Bromley Council are the Highway Authority for A222 Bromley Road junction with A208 Centre Common Road, and as such they are responsible for managing, maintaining and improving this route for all road users. In recent years TfL has been assisting Bromley to develop improved pedestrian crossing facilities at this location, and a proposalfor new crossings is currently being assessed to ensure it is safe to use and does not adversely impact on the local bus services. TfL has also made funding available for implementation via the Local Implementation Plan (LIP) process. Further details of the current scheme they are developing and the timescales for delivery can be sought direct from BromleyCouncil: https://www.bromley.gov.uk/FreedomofInformation. We have been advised that a paper on this issue is being considered by the Council’s committee on 13 March 2024 – the agenda for that committee meeting can be found here: https://cds.bromley.gov.uk/documents/s50114284/Chislehurst%20Report.pdf which contains full details of the proposals.
