Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 February 2018 asking for information about Taxi & Private Hire (TPH) Compliance Officers. I am sorry for the delay in replying.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

TfL Compliance Officers are deployed to hotspot areas to deter and disrupt criminal and non-compliant taxi and private hire activity, take action against drivers who break the rules and gather intelligence on suspected offenders. Compliance Officers also regularly visit operators and the number of visits to their offices have nearly doubled since extra officers were recruited

The number of Compliance Officers combating unsafe and unlicensed taxi and private hire drivers on London’s streets has grown significantly from 143 in 2016 to 274 today. This increase has seen the number of drivers and vehicles checked on the street rise fivefold, and the compliance rate increasing to 90 per cent.

Natural turnover and the fact that not all new recruits complete the comprehensive and rigorous training programme means that recruitment is currently underway to hire further officers.
