FOI request detail

A20 speed restriction

Request ID: FOI-4401-2324
Date published: 25 March 2024

You asked

There has been a 40mph speed restriction in this location for a few months, new enough that SatNavs don’t know about it yet. I would like the following information: • The amount of revenue you have received, per month from motorists since this has been in operation. • The reason the speed restriction operates for several miles and 24/7 365 days when the conditions that were given for its introduction only exist for around 300 yards and a few hours a year - is this a cash cow? • The exact dates when all of the 40 mph signage was installed - much more has been added recently, including adding larger signs and lights. Also the details of the decision around adding more - was it inadequate to begin with?

There has been a 40mph speed restriction in this location for a few months, new enough that SatNavs don’t know about it yet.

I would like the following information:
  • The amount of revenue you have received, per month from motorists since this has been in operation.
  • The reason the speed restriction operates for several miles and 24/7 365 days when the conditions that were given for its introduction only exist for around 300 yards and a few hours a year - is this a cash cow?
It is the responsibility of the police to enforce speed limits and issue speeding fines, the income from which goes to the Treasury, and not to Transport for London.

The extent of the restriction change was agreed to avoid a number of speed limit changes over a short section and to ensure enforcement could be undertaken via average speed cameras. It is not possible to provide a traffic order to be enforced in rainy conditions only.
  • The exact dates when all of the 40mph signage was installed - much more has been added recently, including adding larger signs and lights. Also the details of the decision around adding more - was it inadequate to begin with?
