Our ref: FOI-4382-2324/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 27 February 2024 asking for information about bus usage occupancy levels.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Please find attached three spreadsheets containing the evening bus occupancy levels for a weekday, Saturday and Sunday.

Each file contains the busiest hour, location and direction for each route and evening time period on an average weekday (Monday-Friday), Saturday and Sunday. Also supplied is the resultant peak bus occupancy which is calculated as the hourly bus load divided by the hourly bus capacity. The busiest hour is defined as the hour with maximum hourly bus load and the corresponding location and direction is termed the busiest location and direction. Note that as the busiest hour is based on the maximum hourly load, this does not mean this is equivalent to the highest bus occupancy. Please note the data we hold use the period 19:00-22:00 for the early evening, and 22:00-00:00 for the late evening. We don’t hold any data which further breaks down weekday data separately between Monday-Thursday evenings and Friday evenings.

The data comes from the 2022/23 Period 9 dataset which holds a snapshot of bus demand during the month of November 2022, the weekday, Saturday and Sunday average being the average of multiple weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout this period. Typically we would use a number of Saturday and Sunday dates to determine this average but due to the prevalence of industrial action throughout this period, only two Saturday and Sunday dates were available during this period so there are constraints to the data attached in terms of how representative it is of a typical Saturday and Sunday in November 2022.

Please let me know if this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
