Safeguarding at Beckton and Thamesmead

Request ID: FOI-4369-2324
Date published: 20 March 2024

You asked

Queries about safeguarding at Beckton and Thamesmead Following my visit to TfL's DLR extension project consultation in Thamesmead yesterday, I wish to know, please: (1) What safeguarding currently exists on the north and south banks of the Thames for the (now-abandoned) road bridge between Beckton and Thamesmead? (Web references are fine, but I have not so far traced any links.) (2) If such safeguarding is to be lifted, what timescale for that is expected? (3) What safeguarding exists at Beckton and Thamesmead for any other potential transport schemes, such as roads or an extension of the DLR? (Again, web references are fine.) Whether by way of web references or new responses, I assume maps will be supplied. Thank you in advance for your help.

Your questions and our replies are as below: Following my visit to TfL's DLR extension project consultation in Thamesmead yesterday, I wish to know, please:

  1. What safeguarding currently exists on the north and south banks of the Thames for the (now-abandoned) road bridge between Beckton and Thamesmead? (Web references are fine, but I have not so far traced any links.)

Please see a plan attached showing the safeguarded area. Note that the specific boundary is established in each borough’s local plan policies map. See the Greenwich plan here: https://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200191/planning_policy_and_strategy/869/local_development_framework/2 and the Newham plan here: https://www.newham.gov.uk/downloads/file/1110/local-plan-policies-map-2018-pdf-

  1. If such safeguarding is to be lifted, what timescale for that is expected?

There are no set timescales for any changes to this safeguarding as present; TfL will consider the way forward following the current public consultation on a DLR extension.

  1. What safeguarding exists at Beckton and Thamesmead for any other potential transport schemes, such as roads or an extension of the DLR? (Again, web references are fine.)

No other formal transport safeguarding exists in this area.
