FOI request detail

London Buses - Please hold on and accidents/incidents

Request ID: FOI-4346-1718
Date published: 26 February 2018

You asked

1. The number of "cases that have been brought to TFL's attention where passengers have fallen and sustained injuries because they have been unaware that the bus was ready to move from the stop", and; 2. Exactly how many requests you have received from TFL passengers to raise awareness of this specific issue? None of the data appears to be analysed according to any incident or injury that has occurred due to the passenger being unaware that the bus was about to move off/was moving off? Your colleague specifically referenced (in quotes above) cases that have been brought to TFL's attention where passengers have fallen and sustained injuries because they have been unaware that the bus was ready to move from the stop.... There is no answer to this in the data references you have sent me? Neither does it contain any reference to numbers of requests from passengers to raise awareness of this specific issue? So, as before, I would be grateful if you would forward to me the information I have requested at points (1) and (2) above.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-4346-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 29 January 2018 asking for information about buses.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require.

Safety is paramount to us and we have trialled this announcement to see if it might help make the network safer. We appreciate that there may be other ways of informing passengers and over time, as part of a new bus safety standard, we may be able to adopt them. But, this is something immediate we could do now, to advise passengers, and on that basis it has been tried out. We also regularly study significant bodies of feedback from customers and consider the views expressed.

There are 5,000 injuries per year on our buses and trips and falls recorded in the safety management system make up more than half of these. We do not have figures for those incidents that occurred specifically at the point of a bus moving away from the stop, however the operators think a significant proportion would be prevented by holding on, based on the insight they have into incident investigation.

We are unable to provide a number of the requests we have received to raise awareness of this issue. There is no specific category in our complaints/correspondence recording tool that would enable us to extract a number that would answer this question.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal

Yours sincerely
