Round up numbers A2 Average speed zone

Request ID: FOI-4275-2324
Date published: 06 March 2024

You asked

Can you please confirm how rounding up numbers work for the purpose of average of speed enforcement? For example, if a driver's average speed is 50.51, do you consider that as 51 and penalise drivers? Lastly, why is TfL not using variable speed limit in quieter times?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-4275-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18th February 2024 asking for information about speed limits on the A2.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Can you please confirm how rounding up numbers work for the purpose of average of speed enforcement? For example, if a driver's average speed is 50.51, do you consider that as 51 and penalise drivers? Lastly, why is TfL not using variable speed limit in quieter times?”.

In answer to your first question on speed enforcement, this would be a question to put to the police, as they rather than TfL are responsible for enforcing speed limits. FOI requests to the Metropolitan Police can be made via its website here:

https://www.met.police.uk/rqo/request/ri/request-information/rip/request-information-police/request-information-about-police/foi-request-form/

In answer to your second question, the A20 does not have variable speed infrastructure for the speed limit to be set dynamically, nor are there any plans to implement any. Note that no other roads on the Transport for London Road Network have Variable Speed Limits either, which are predominately used on the National Highways motorway network.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
