Request ID: FOI-4267-1718

In TfL's latest Commissioner's Report dated 30th January (http://content.tfl.gov.uk/board-20180130-item07-commissioner-report.pdf), TfL mentions £809M of savings will be made by the end of the 2017/18 period (p.38). The document also says: "Business areas are continuing to explore how we can modernise our organisation so we function more efficiently and effectively. In November, an additional 18 business areas launched formal consultations with our people and our trade unions on plans to change their structures and the way they work. "As part of this phase we are reviewing the work of 6,000 roles in a variety of managerial, support and other nonfrontline areas across our professional services, Surface Transport and London Underground." My questions are: 1) How many of those 6,000 roles are engineering roles? 2) When will any potential redundancies be finalised/confirmed?

My questions are:
1. How many of those 6,000 roles are engineering roles?

We are undertaking the largest ever overhaul of our organisation to provide the most efficient and cost effective transport service for Londoners. We have already reduced management layers and bureaucracy and merged functions in other areas to eliminate duplication and reliance on expensive agency staff.

We are consulting on further plans in a number of other managerial, support and other non-frontline areas across TfL and London Underground. None of this will compromise safety, which will always remain our top priority.

1799 engineering roles are in scope of the consultation phase that launched in November 2017. The number reflects the baseline at 2015/16 year-end. This number does not indicate potential role reductions or redundancies it is simply the number of existing roles that were reviewed. We aim to do all we can to mitigate redundancies and ensure key talent and skills are retained through redeploying displaced staff across the business where possible.

2. When will any potential redundancies be finalised/confirmed?

TfL is committed to meaningful consultations with the Trade Unions, which is currently ongoing and is committed to avoiding redundancies wherever possible. We are therefore unable to finalise/confirm any potential redundancies until the consultation and redeployment process is complete.
